GALLERY THREE - CRETANS

Women's Maze, Orcas Island, Washington USA

I arrived at the northern part of Orcas Island in the north west corner of Washington in late October of 1989. I could see Vancouver Island from the area. After a night of discussion, we left it to our dream state to come up with a design.

My image was of a circular center surrounded by a circular pathway not directly connected to the center. The design has obvious metaphoric harmony with female anatomy. The leveled site had no surface soil, so earth had to be brought in and the mounds built up. There was so much rock just lying around that I used it to make small stone walls lining the mounds. The last day of the job I saw a bald eagle in Douglas Fir next to the design.
